For university students:
You need to have the course materials as well for some of the exercises, but some are also self contained and you can do them independently.

Week One

Lesson One
1. The first thing you need to know is what is in the exam, so look at the documents below:
B1 Exam Description

2. Your level and your learning
You may not know exactly what your level is, or what you should work on. You can organise your language study ( of any European language) by making an eportfolio. This may also be useful for you in the future (for job interviews etc.)
Follow this link and download the three components and then begin to make your own portfolio. Ask your teacher for help if you need it.
3. Learning from each other
Everyone knows that you can learn from your teacher but you can learn a lot from each other too. Learning is an adventure which can be done in groups. So find out who is in your group. Get to know the other students, help each other if you miss lessons, meet in groups to work together. This will build your confidence as well as your knowledge of the language.
Start by going onto the discussion (at the top of the page on the right) "Introduce yourself", and introducing yourself:

4. The Class Blog
This is the wiki where you will find information and a lot of activities to help you learn. There is also a class blog, however, that you should look at regularly because that is where messages are posted and every week you can look at:
a) an overview of your lessons:
b) class notes (if there were any that week)
c) preparation for the next week.
This is very useful for everyone (and not only when you miss a lesson)

Exam Practice1
How do you usually do cloze tests (These are the tests where you have to "fill in the gap")?
Do you
1. start reading (maybe translating the words as you go) and choosing words
2. read and put in the words (without translating)
3. read the complete text first and then put in the words.

You can learn a lot from the practice tests too:
1. Make a note of three or more new expressions you like and want to remember
2. Use the texts as models for writing. Change the first text, for instance, so that it is true for your class (if you are in a class) or for the perfect class (if you are not in a class) etc. In this way you start to "make the language your own" by assimilating forms and expressions.

Extra Work

1. The History and Future of Reading

In class we watched a (rather difficult) video about the Ipad. You can find this work on CAE Page 6 Don't worry if you don't understand everything. Just see if you can watch it and understand how to use the Ipad for reading. Then you can do the reading comprehension work that follows. We will look at this in class next week.

Week Two
This week we continued to discuss the history and future of reading and to revise the use of the simple past and the present perfect.

2. Focus on Language
"Used to do" or "Used to doing"?
We looked at the difference between "used to" as a verb form and "used to" as an adjective form. Think about what the difference is and then check this document to find out:
